“I’m the worst in the room”: Starting strength training when you’re 60+ and nervous

Neven Antic • May 18, 2026

A lot of over60s tell us the same thing before their first session:

  • “I’ll probably be the weakest one here.”
  • “I don’t want to hold everyone up.”
  • “I’m embarrassed about how unfit I am.”

Here’s how we handle that at D8 – and why feeling like “the worst in the room” is often the first step to big change.

Everyone starts somewhere

Most of our ForeverStrength members started with:

  • Very little recent exercise
  • A few aches and pains
  • A fair bit of anxiety about walking into a gym

You’re not the odd one out. You’re the norm.

What your first session actually looks like

In ForeverStrength, our over 60s strength training in Adelaide:

  • Your first visit is an assessment, not a bootcamp
  • We talk about your history, medications and concerns
  • We do simple, lowstress tests (sittostand, balance, basic strength)
  • We decide what’s appropriate for you before you ever touch a weight

No being thrown into the deep end.

How we keep groups comfortable

We:

  • Train over60s with other over60s in seniors strength classes in Adelaide
  • Keep group sizes small
  • Encourage questions and breaks
  • Progress everyone at their own pace

Most people find that within a few weeks, they’re no longer worried about being “the worst.” They’re too busy focusing on their own improvements.

Wins that matter

Common early wins:

  • Getting out of chairs more easily
  • Less puffed on short walks
  • Feeling steadier on stairs
  • Sleeping better

From there, we build.
