"I hate the gym": How to train when you've never liked exercise
Not everyone loves training.
Plenty of D8 members started with:
- Bad school sport experiences
- Feeling judged in past gyms
- A story in their head that "exercise just isn't my thing"
They still got stronger. Here's how.
Step 1: Change the goal from "love it" to "do it"
You don't have to love adult strength training in Adelaide at first. You just have to:
- Show up
- Follow the plan
- Give yourself credit for doing the hard thing
Enjoyment often comes later, when:
- You're better at the movements
- You know people's names
- You start seeing changes
Step 2: Pick an environment that doesn't feel like high school PE
Avoid places that feel like:
- A fashion show
- A competition
- A nightclub
Look for:
- Coaching-focused strength training classes in Adelaide
- Real people, mixed abilities
- A culture of encouragement, not show-off energy
That's the environment we work hard to maintain in Adult Group Strength.
Step 3: Keep the bar low at the start
Instead of "I'll train 5 times a week and overhaul my life," try:
- 2 sessions a week, non-negotiable
- One simple food upgrade
- A walk whenever you can manage it
Small, boring, repeatable actions.
Step 4: Measure wins that matter to you
We celebrate things like:
- Clothes fitting better
- Easier stairs
- Less huffing and puffing
- Feeling proud walking into the gym
Those count just as much as bar numbers.
