Strong, not smashed: A guide to strength training for Adelaide women 35+

Neven Antic • March 30, 2026

If you’re a woman 35+ in Adelaide, you might have a love–hate relationship with exercise.

You’ve tried classes where everyone seems younger and fitter, or bootcamps where you feel like you’re just trying not to die. You want to be strong and confident, not smashed and sore for three days.

Here’s what safe, effective adult strength training in Adelaide should look like for women in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

Your goals are different now

Most of the women we see at D8 want:

  • To feel comfortable in their clothes
  • To have energy for work, kids and life
  • To feel strong and capable, not fragile
  • To stop their joints complaining all the time

That means your training has to support:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Busy schedules
  • Previous injuries or niggles

Not ignore them.

What good strength training looks like

For our Adult women in strength training classes in Adelaide, we focus on:

  • Technique first: squats, hinges, pushes, pulls done with control
  • Progressive overload: small, planned increases over time
  • Jointfriendly options: variations that work around knees, backs and shoulders
  • Enough rest: between sets and weeks so you actually recover

You don’t need to throw a barbell over your head on Day 1. You need to build a base you trust.

Why “smash yourself” doesn’t work long term

High intensity classes can feel like a quick fix:

  • Big calorie burn
  • Everyone red faced
  • Loud music and hype

But if you’re constantly exhausted, sore and craving junk afterwards, it’s not helping.

We’d rather see you:

  • Train 2–3 times per week, year round
  • Feel better after training, not wrecked
  • Build muscle that supports your joints and metabolism

How we support women at D8

In Adult Group Strength our small group personal training in Adelaide for busy women, we:

  • Start with a 60 minute assessment and chat
  • Put you into a program that fits your current level
  • Keep group sizes small so coaches can actually coach
  • Adjust for cycles, perimenopause/menopause, shift work and family life

You don’t have to be “fit” to start. You just have to start.
