Couples who train together: How to make it work (without killing each other)

Neven Antic • September 3, 2026

We see a lot of couples at D8.

Done well, training together:

  • Keeps you both accountable
  • Gives you shared wins
  • Sets a strong example for kids

Done badly, it becomes:

  • One person dragging the other
  • Arguments about who “needs it more”
  • Quiet resentment

Tip 1: Agree on the goal

You don’t need identical goals, but you do need:

  • A shared reason you’re both coming (e.g. “we want to be healthy, strong parents”)
  • Respect for each other’s specific targets (strength, fat loss, energy, etc.)

Tip 2: Same gym, not necessarily same sessions

Some couples thrive training in the same class. Others:

  • Prefer different times
  • Need separate “headspace”

Both are fine.

At D8, many couples train in Adult Group Strength, our strength training classes in Adelaide, at different times that fit their own routines.

Tip 3: Support, don't coach

Unless you’re literally a coach, your job is:

  • Encouragement
  • Logistics (helping each other get there)
  • Celebrating progress

Not critiquing form or telling the other person what they “should” eat.

Tip 4: Plan around family logistics

Work backwards from:

  • Kids’ sport
  • Work hours
  • Nonnegotiables

Then schedule each person’s 2–3 weekly sessions so you both get meaningful time in the gym.

Nurses, ambos, police, hospitality, FIFO… lots of Adelaide adults don’t have a “normal” week. That doesn’t mean you can’t train. It just means the plan for your adult strength training in Adelaide has to be built differently.

You don’t need gym numbers to know whether over 60s strength training in Adelaide would help. Here are 7 simple “everyday tests” we use with over 60s. Try them and notice how they feel. Stand up from a chair without using your hands Climb a flight of stairs without pulling on the rail Carry two shopping bags from the car to the kitchen Get down to the floor and back up again safely Balance on one leg for 10 seconds Walk 400–500 m at a comfortable pace without stopping Pick up something from the floor without holding your breath If 3 or more of these feel shaky, slow or scary, balance and strength classes for seniors in Adelaide will likely help
