Training with arthritis or joint replacements: What’s realistic?

Many over 60s think:

“I’ve got arthritis / a new knee / a new hip – the gym is off limits now.”

In reality, sensible over 60s strength training in Adelaide is often one of the best things you can do – with the right approach.

Step 1: Work with, not against, your joints

We always:

  • Ask about your medical history and current advice
  • Find ranges of motion that feel okay
  • Pick variations that don’t spike pain

Example: higher box squats instead of low squats for sore knees.

Step 2: Focus on what you can do

Instead of fixating on banned lists, we ask:

  • What directions and movements are tolerated?
  • What load feels safe?
  • How do you feel 24–48 hours later?

We build your program from your “green lights,” not your “red lights.”

Step 3: Progress patiently

With arthritis or replacements, we:

  • Increase loads slowly
  • Respect flareups and back off when needed
  • Aim for gradual improvements in strength and confidence

Consistency matters more than speed.

How this looks at D8

In ForeverStrength:

  • Many members have arthritis, joint replacements or long pain histories
  • We tailor their program individually inside the small group
  • The goal is to help them do more in daily life, not chase ego numbers

Want to see if this is possible for you?

If you’ve written off strength training because of arthritis or past surgery:

Nurses, ambos, police, hospitality, FIFO… lots of Adelaide adults don’t have a “normal” week. That doesn’t mean you can’t train. It just means the plan for your adult strength training in Adelaide has to be built differently.

You don’t need gym numbers to know whether over 60s strength training in Adelaide would help. Here are 7 simple “everyday tests” we use with over 60s. Try them and notice how they feel. Stand up from a chair without using your hands Climb a flight of stairs without pulling on the rail Carry two shopping bags from the car to the kitchen Get down to the floor and back up again safely Balance on one leg for 10 seconds Walk 400–500 m at a comfortable pace without stopping Pick up something from the floor without holding your breath If 3 or more of these feel shaky, slow or scary, balance and strength classes for seniors in Adelaide will likely help
