From “not sporty” to active teen: How the gym can be a fresh start

Neven Antic • September 17, 2026

Not every kid loves team sports.

Some feel:

  • Awkward on the field
  • Left out
  • “Not sporty”

That doesn’t mean they’re doomed to a sedentary life.

When the gym can feel different

In JuniorGym Academy, our junior gym in Adelaide:

  • There’s no scoreboard
  • Progress is individual
  • Kids get to focus on what they can control (effort, learning skills)

For many nonsporty kids, this is the first time they’ve felt “good at” something physical.

How we build confidence

We:

  • Start with very achievable movements
  • Praise effort and improvement, not talent
  • Track simple numbers so they can see progress

As their strength and coordination improve through kids strength training in Adelaide, many:

  • Become more open to trying other activities
  • Feel less anxious in PE
  • Carry themselves differently at school

Why this matters longterm

If a child decides “sport isn’t for me” at 10–12, it often becomes:

“Exercise isn’t for me” as an adult.

Giving them one positive, structured physical experience can change that story.

Want to give your child a fresh start?

If your 10–15yearold doesn’t connect with traditional sport but you don’t want them to miss out on movement:

Book a JuniorGym Assessment.

We’ll meet them where they’re at and show them a different way to be active and confident.
