Shift workers: How to train when your roster is all over the place

Neven Antic • July 30, 2026

Nurses, ambos, police, hospitality, FIFO… lots of Adelaide adults don’t have a “normal” week.

That doesn’t mean you can’t train. It just means the plan for your adult strength training in Adelaide has to be built differently.

Principle 1: Plan by roster, not by day name

Instead of “I train Mon/Wed/Fri,” we look at:

  • Your roster pattern (e.g. 2 day shifts, 2 nights, 4 off)
  • When you’re least wrecked
  • When travel time is lowest

Then we pick 2–3 “anchor points” per roster cycle where training makes sense.

Principle 2: Strength first, extras second

When energy and sleep are unpredictable, we:

  • Prioritise 2–3 Adult Group Strength sessions per cycle
  • Treat extra walks or cardio as optional bonuses

You’ll get better return from those coached strength training classes in Adelaide than from random exhausted jogs.

Principle 3: Adjust intensity to reality

On brutal weeks we:

  • Use slightly lighter loads
  • Keep sets and reps in a “you could do 1–2 more” range
  • Focus on keeping the habit alive

On better rested weeks we push harder.

Principle 4: Be kind but honest

We’ve coached plenty of shift workers.

You’re not “less disciplined.” You’re playing the game on hard mode. You just need:

  • A realistic plan
  • Coaches who understand shift work
  • Flexibility built into your membership
