Is your athlete overtrained or underprepared? How to tell the difference

Parents often ask:

“Are they doing too much… or not enough?”

The symptoms can look similar: tired, sore, flat. The causes are different.

Signs of underprepared

Common clues:

  • Gassed early in games
  • Struggles with physical contests
  • Picks up niggles when the season ramps up

Often, these athletes have:

  • Little to no structured strength base
  • Jumped straight into heavy training loads

They’re not doing “too much.” They did too little smart athlete strength and conditioning in Adelaide beforehand.

Signs of overtrained / overloaded

Common clues:

  • Constantly sore and flat
  • Performance dropping despite high effort
  • Grumpy, struggling with sleep

Often, these kids are:

  • Doing school sport + club sport + extra sessions
  • Getting very little recovery
  • Maybe added random gym work without a plan

How we approach this at D8

In the 10 Week Athlete Accelerator, our sports performance training in Adelaide, we:

  • Test where your athlete is at now
  • Ask about their full load (school, club, extras)
  • Decide whether they need more structured strength, or smarter load management (or both)

Then we build athlete strength and conditioning in Adelaide that improves performance without burying them.

If you’re not sure whether your 15–20yearold is overdoing it or underprepared:

Book an Athlete Assessment & Testing session.

We’ll test, ask the right questions and give you a clear recommendation.

You don’t need gym numbers to know whether over 60s strength training in Adelaide would help. Here are 7 simple “everyday tests” we use with over 60s. Try them and notice how they feel. Stand up from a chair without using your hands Climb a flight of stairs without pulling on the rail Carry two shopping bags from the car to the kitchen Get down to the floor and back up again safely Balance on one leg for 10 seconds Walk 400–500 m at a comfortable pace without stopping Pick up something from the floor without holding your breath If 3 or more of these feel shaky, slow or scary, balance and strength classes for seniors in Adelaide will likely help
